Rastamentary (2012)

An intriguing independent documentary that focuses on Rastafarianism to an extent that has not been done before. The film highlights the fundamental principles and beliefs of this religion and ably explains how it has developed over the years and what it means to not only Jamaicans but also to the Rasta diaspora around the world. As the director Tahric Finn explained to me, the documentary “seeks to present an objective glimpse into the Rastafarian culture by speaking with some of its followers and discussing how they came to this belief, and the effects it has on many aspects of their lives.”

The documentary itself is extremely well structured and seems to go out of its way to avoid focusing too much on many of the preconceptions that non-Rastafarians have as to the importance of specific cultural figures in the religious movement, most notably Bob Marley. And while Marley is mentioned in the film, the focus on other influential figures such as Emperor Haile Selassie and Marcus Garvey sets this documentary apart from other films that have attempted to highlight this frequently misunderstood religion.

I liked this documentary a lot.

  1. Greetings Tahric Finn et al.

My wife and I have just finished viewing your very balanced and informative documentary on the Rastafari faith.

As Rastafarians, it is always a pleasure to come across such works that seek to explain I and I thoughts and opinions to a wider audience.

I am a 51 year old , Black British Born, Dominican reared who became conscious and a Rastafarian in Dominican as a teenager while growing up in the 70s. My wife is a 58 years old, African American born and raised her entire life in a very close Baptist family during the Civil Rights Movement in Memphis, Tenn, USA .

The blessing for us is that Jah through his divine wisdom brought us together from different locations and cultures in the world but who both have always been conscious of the black struggle. We live in England and have just celebrated our seven year wedding anniversary. We are both published authors sharing many skills including writing, music, business, etc.

We say all of the above to let you know not only were we pleased with your documentary including all your participants and what they each had to say but that it represented a work that we feel everyone should view. It is very real and answers the very questions people are asking. We feel very strongly in others being educated in the knowledge of the essence every aspect of your coverage.

We applaud your efforts and want you to know we too are in our own way doing all we can by virtue of our talents and if there is ever anything we can say or do to assist you, please let us know. I have included my website so you can see my book, ‘Dread, Rastafari and Ethiopia’ as I am writing the untold truth of the Rastafari Movement while growing up in Dominica. Please feel free to visit our AlbertandTempie.com website, Diablotintelevision.net website to see our other works as well as we invite you to our facebook page, Rastafari Alliance for Science, Technology and Arts (R.A.S.T.A),

We have posted your documentary on all of our websites and pages because we know others will be as en lighted as we were. That is what it is all about. Spreading the word to further educate and communicate.

We encourage you to continue your good works!

    Jah Rastafari,

Ras Albert and Empress Tempie Williams
